Individual Therapy
Individual therapy offers a one-on-one space for the client and therapist to work together in a supportive, confidential setting.
Getting Started
For Adult Clients: The process begins with a free initial consultation to determine if the therapeutic fit feels right. This gives potential clients the opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of the therapist’s approach.
For Adolescent Clients: The process begins with a free initial consultation with the parent(s) / caregiver(s) to determine whether the practice is a good fit. This consultation allows parents/caregivers to ask questions, learn about the therapist’s approach, and discuss initial concerns.
What to Expect
First Full Session
- For Adults Clients: This 50-minute session focuses on getting to know the client—their background, current challenges, and goals. Informed consent is reviewed, and any questions are addressed.
- For Adolescent Clients: The first 50-minute session is typically held with the parent(s) / caregiver(s) only. This session focuses on understanding the adolescent client’s background, current challenges, and the parents’ / caregivers’ goals for their child in therapy. Informed consent, confidentiality, and limits of privacy are reviewed, and questions are addressed.
Second Session
- For Adults Clients: The focus shifts to identifying key issues to work on, using information gathered during the first session, and creating what is commonly referred to as a treatment plan to help guide future sessions.
- For Adolescent Clients: The second session may include both the adolescent and parent(s) / caregiver(s), or the adolescent alone, depending on the adolescent’s comfort level and clinical needs. This session begins with building rapport with the adolescent client and includes discussion of current presenting issues, treatment goals and expectations for therapy.
Ongoing Sessions
- For Adult Clients: Going forward, sessions are tailored to the client’s needs and are focused on addressing the concerns that have been identified. Changes to the treatment goals can be addressed as needed.
- For Adolescent Clients: These sessions are primarily individual sessions with the adolescent client and are tailored to their specific needs. The sessions will focus on addressing identified concerns and treatment goals. Parent / Caregiver involvement is incorporated as clinically appropriate.
